Significant advances have recently ocurred in the nutritional care of hospitalized patients. New and, improved diets and delivery techniques have been developed to administer nutrients both safely and eficaciously. Moreover, selected patient populations have been identified who clearly have improved clinical outcomes primarily due to these advances in nutritional therapy. Acditional studies have shown that there are patients who do not benefit from exogenous nutritional support. This presentation will review the following: Evolution of nutritional support in the United States, rationale for feeding into the gut, indications and contraindications for enteral nutrition, clinical trials of enteral feeding in trauma and critically ill patients and personal preferences in dietary delivery.
