Liver is the most commonly injured organ in patients with abdominal trauma. Once liver injury has been diagnosed, the injury must be clinically assessed. Liver injuries are classified according to anatomic descriptions that include simple capsular tears, simple lacerations, stellate or multiple lacerations, avulsion or crush injuries, and hepatic venous injuries. Initial classification of a liver injury can be done in accordance with the organ injury scale devised by the American Association for Surgery of Trauma. This system provides an anatomic description of the injury on a scale from one to six from least to most severe.
